What is my treatment philosophy?
My core assumption is that each of us has the innate capacity to do all of the following: feel happy; form close and satisfying relationships with others; manage situations effectively; and make good decisions. However, sometimes that innate capacity gets blocked. That is when we run into emotional or behavioral problems. It is my job to help you understand what is blocking your own innate capacity. The process of understanding the block is what dissolves it. The work I do with people is not necessarily to teach them new ways of managing their world (although I do that sort of coaching when appropriate); instead, I help remove whatever obstacles are blocking their own innate capacity to manage their world.

How does the process of becoming a client work?
I offer an 50-minute initial consultation free of charge to all new clients. This is an opportunity for you to describe your mental health concern(s). Then, I will briefly describe what I would do to help. This way, you can get some idea of what it would be like to work with me, and whether you would feel comfortable talking to me. Your therapist is your employee; it is only natural and reasonable to want to interview a potential employee, or even several potential employees, before you decide whether to hire.

Based on that initial consultation, you can decide whether you would like to meet with me for an initial therapy session. During the initial therapy session, I will ask more detailed questions about your concern(s), background, and medical history. At all times, you are welcome to share with me as much or as little as you would like.

I also invite all clients to continually evaluate whether therapy is helpful and whether they feel comfortable working with me. Addressing that makes treatment more effective, or alerts us that I might not be the best fit for you at that time. In that case, it is my job to help you determine and obtain other services that will work better for you.
